What On-Page SEO Actually Includes
"SEO optimized" gets thrown around a lot. Here's what on-page SEO really means, in plain language — so you can tell whether it's actually being done.
What is on-page SEO?
On-page SEO is everything on your website itself that helps search engines understand what your business does, where it serves, and why it's relevant to a search. It's different from off-site SEO (like Google Business Profile and the map), which happens outside your website.
The building blocks
Titles and meta descriptions
Every page needs a unique, descriptive title and meta description. These tell search engines what the page is about and are often the first thing a searcher reads. Reusing the same title across pages is a common, avoidable mistake.
Headings and structure
One clear main heading (H1) per page, with logical sub-headings. This isn't just for search engines — it's how humans and screen readers navigate a page too.
URLs and internal links
Human-readable URLs (like /plumbing-website-design, not /page?id=42) and sensible links between related pages help both people and crawlers move through your site.
Images
Descriptive filenames and useful alt text so images are accessible and understandable. Alt text should describe the image, not stuff keywords.
Structured data
Behind-the-scenes markup (JSON-LD) that describes your business, pages and services in a format search engines read directly. It should match what's actually visible on the page — never fabricated reviews or ratings.
The technical layer
- Canonical tags so search engines know the preferred version of each page.
- An XML sitemap and robots configuration so crawlers can find and index the right pages.
- Mobile optimization and performance — a fast, mobile-friendly site is easier to rank and nicer to use.
- HTTPS and secure hosting.
- A custom 404 and redirect handling so nothing breaks when pages change.
